I have no idea who the original owner was but I do know who it will be buried with! My personal collection of mics and elements consists of about 30 microphones which are mostly Shure bullets, and some of the various models of the Astatic JT30 which have different model numbers from the early Astatic years. You may be able to see the subtle differences between the various models, or maybe not. I do know that the early models were made in Youngstown Ohio, and the later models were made in Conneaut Ohio. The end of the shells that are more pointed give them the appearance of being slightly shorter, whether they actually are or not. Whatever the case, I prefer the more pointed shells myself. You should be able to notice the bottom part of the shells, the part where the tags are attached, are deeper on the early models than they are on the later models too.

A very unusual mic to look at, but when you get it in your hand it is surprising how comfortable it feels. Shure introduced the Controlled Reluctance Transducer element in The elements had a unique design that made them immune to temperature and climate conditions. It consisted of a brass disc that was used as the main support for the built in transformer, magnetic assembly, diaphram, armature assembly and cover. I have used Astatic Mic’s since the early seventy’s. The quality of sound has been one of the best for my hobby. Lately the PPT components have suffered. First, I love the old Art Deco appearance of this microphone. Unfortunately the D’s are quite out of date electronically. Frequently the original Dynamic Cartridges are shot. Gutting out the junk and replacing it with a new Electric Condenser mic element and CAT5 cable with an appropriate plug, brings it up to date.
Wired it to my Tram D resulting in booming audio and positive radio checks from everyone I talked with just as it was designed to do with the Tram D, perfect match I could not be happier. My vintage radio shack is looking great.

The Astatic Corporation is a commercial audio products manufacturer founded in Youngstown, Ohio in In , two amateur radio operators, Creed M. Woodworth, W8AHW began experimenting with different types of microphones for their “ham” stations. Their mutual friend, Charles Semple, worked for Brush Development Company where he had been experimenting with Rochelle salt crystals. Semple demonstrated some crystal pick-ups that Brush was working with, leading Chorpening and Woodworth to found The Astatic Microphone Laboratory, Inc.
Semple was brought into the company as general manager to manufacture and market the company’s model D Crystal Microphone as well as other crystal microphones, crystal phonograph pickups and recording heads.
The original crystal element is dated Dec and still kicks butt! Some minor scratches in the brown paint, but the mic looks great. Astatic didn’t scrimp on.
Like the condenser microphone, this is also a type of pressure microphone, and responds to sound pressure. Shown at left is a section view of a dynamic microphone. These microphones are known for their durability; they are less fragile than condenser microphones, and are able to take in much louder noises before they begin distorting the sound.

I started out with a Shure 55A, still the pride of my collection, and went on from there. I now have over 20 vintage microphones dating from the s to the s or so. There’s so little information available to the vintage mic collector, I’ve found. I have not come across a decent book on the subject, which surprises me because there seem to be quite few collectors around.
