Dating sims and visual novels were, in the past, often overlooked video game genres. That isn’t the case as much nowadays with their growing popularity in the West. Whether it’s to live vicariously through the characters on your screen, or the desire to enjoy a good story, dating sims and visual novels provide hours of entertainment. They can be the usual slice of the life story of romance or less serious and more humorous like Dream Daddy and Monster Prom.
There’ve been a lot of great dating sims and visual novels to come out so far, with many more expected to be released this year. From the same studio behind Negligee , a new adult visual novel is coming out on August 14, called Future Girls. In Future Girls , you play as a recently graduated university student. Suddenly, a strange wormhole opens up, bringing with it two girls who claim to be from a future where a calamity kept you from a relationship with them.
Future Girls has setup a typical visual novel with a slight sci-fi twist. Whether you end up with either of the girls from the future or take a different route is entirely up to you. One day she saves an old woman who turns out to be a witch, who gives her a magical spellbook that will make whoever’s name written inside, fall in love with her until the next full moon. Dating sims that aren’t visual novels
Once just off-shoots and continuations of popular anime or franchises, dating simulation games and visual novels have seen a popularity boom in recent years. These Choose Your Own Adventure -esque games are growing in popularity on Steam and other platforms for their engaging characters and storylines and loved for their ability to transport readers and make them truly feel like part of the story. A lot of this has to do with the talent of the voice actors that bring these characters to life.
A visual novel is like an interactive comic book; some are just clicked through like a story, while many have interactive elements. The choices a reader makes will change the way the story progresses.

By Nilson Carroll. Using game genre as metaphor, I put a digital avatar of myself in a series of vulnerable positions for Untitled Dating Sim. This work considers the abstractions of human bodies in games as more than just a means to score points through a patriarchal notion. Video games are made up of designed exchanges between player and game. It is up to the game creator to assign these exchanges moralities, in-game values, and meanings, to give them flavor, inject them with violence, cleverness, primordial energy.
By their nature, visual novels are designed to be quieter and more contemplative compared to games in other genres, dealing more with relationships between characters than centering around violent action sequences. Stemming from visual novels is the niche Japanese genre of dating sims, which vary from the playfully absurd to the pornographacation of characters of all genders and ages 1. Inspired by dating sims, I developed a game where the player dates three iterations of Nilson.
Players are given many options throughout the dates, and while ultimately contrived and controlled, the game allows players the choice to act kind, flirty, or cold toward Nilson. Untitled Dating Sim begins with a questionnaire. All other answers in the initial questionnaire are recorded in variables except for this one. A queer video game, I consider Untitled Dating Sim an interactive self-portrait and intense act of sharing.

Are there any kind of non-anime-esque art-styled choice-orientated visual novels? I mean, I understand the whole genre is kind of associated with anime-like dating sim visual novels but there has to be some that are of decent quality and aren’t ‘lol anime art style and dating to get bewbs and cats’. Updated June 21st, , By Ericka Blye: With their growth in popularity in the West, there has been a wider range of themes dating sims have tackled. And while a lot are still heartfelt stories about love and relationships, there are quite a few that are made with the intent of being absurd and making you laugh while you enjoy romancing your partner of choice. EDIT: For clarity, a “dating simulator” is just a visual novel where you go on dates and potentially hook up with one of various characters throughout the process of the visual novel assuming you choose the correct dialog options. The gameplay is the same as any other visual novel – but your end goal is usually romantically charged. I like the Visual Novels but the Dating Sims are definitely not my thing.
