We apologize for the inconvenience…

With the new ranked season ongoing, this is great news for those who have noted several aspects of the current matchmaking system that have caused issues. Valve also stated that whatever changes are in the works will be ready later this week. We are working on a few fixes to improve matchmaking quality and expect to have it out later this coming week. The main issues of the current matchmaking system included half stacked players constantly being forced to play against five stacked teams, which would lead to one-sided matches. Along with the players getting banned for poor behavior scores and some issues with high MMR players having extremely long queue times, there is a rampant issue with players being able to report anyone with no consequence. Even if you play well in a match and end up losing by a small margin, players on your team who think you played poorly can freely report you without a reason. This has essentially turned Dota into a win to commend system where losses result in teams mass reporting each other if they are playing with randoms. This likely means a new addition to the system is coming that will weigh the reports differently based on the situation. It might even end up harming the behavior scores of those players who mass report others for reasons that the system deems unnecessary. That would make players think twice about reporting someone after a loss just because they are a little salty.

The news was rolled out as part of a DOTA 2 update blog post. Regarding the ban wave, Valve notes that several different groups of various bad actors will now be banned, including players with low behavior scores and players who are detected buying and selling Steam accounts. Anyone using exploits or cheats will also be banned. The blog post from Valve is currently offline, but a copy is available from Google Cache.

Smurf accounts — accounts created by the same player to deceptively present themselves as less experienced than they actually are — are also being cracked down on. First, Valve has closed loopholes that allowed players to dodge the phone number verification system. Players will not be allowed to queue for ranked matches until and unless they attach a unique number. Second, access to ranked matches will now require at least hours of playtime in DOTA 2.

This should help cut down on the smurfing problem. If players attempt to game the system but demonstrate a level of skill that indicates they clearly belong in a different group, the game will adjust their matchmaking rating MMR more quickly, to line them up against the right players.

Valve bans over 40,000 Dota 2 players for abusing matchmaking

Dota 2 is played in matches between two teams of five players, with each team occupying and defending their own separate base on the map. Each of the ten players independently controls a powerful character, known as a “hero”, who all have unique abilities and differing styles of play. During a match, players collect experience points and items for their heroes to successfully defeat the opposing team’s heroes in player versus player combat.

A team wins by being the first to destroy the other team’s “Ancient”, a large structure located within their base. Development of Dota 2 began in when IceFrog , lead designer of Defense of the Ancients , was hired by Valve to create a modernized remake for them in the Source game engine. It was officially released for Microsoft Windows , OS X , and Linux -based personal computers via the digital distribution platform Steam in July , following a Windows-only open beta phase that began two years prior.

All the while these same offenders, if threatened to be reported, will report you instead and lo and behold you end up in LP when the snowflakes are still out there.

It appears that there were some issues with the Dota 2 matchmaking rating changes that were rolled out in September. Valve said in its latest Dota 2 blog post that “some players, especially at the high end, have experienced a significant drop in matchmaking quality as a result of our recent iterations,” and so it’s made further changes to the system in the most recent game update.

The new update adds a rule for matchmaking for Immortal ranks intended to reduce some common “negative behaviors” and make solo queuing more viable, and also adds new restrictions on what solo and party matchups are allowed. Numerous bugs in the matchmaking system have been fixed, and there will be a greater emphasis on “having supports not be the highest MMR players in a game.

The update also makes some changes to the post-game evaluation screen, and adds a post-game survey that players will sometimes be asked to complete that “allow us to gather more player sentiments on match quality to help find common patterns to what makes matches enjoyable vs what makes them unenjoyable. The previous update included a wave of bans on players “at the very extreme edge” of toxic and negative behavior, but that only impacted a small percentage of the player base.

We set the threshold score at due to the low probability that anyone would be that low without having had a consistently negative impact on the experiences of many different teammates. Valve warned that matchmaking could be “a little unstable” over the day or two following the rollout of this update, but invited players to continue submitting feedback on the changes once things had stabilized. The other big category we are going to be focusing on soon is revamping the new player experience for an update in the future,” the blog post says.

Matchmaking is the process through which the system groups players into opposing teams for public games modes. With the exception of bot games, matchmaking is mostly determined by matchmaking ratings MMR. Unranked or casual games do not display matchmaking ratings and still doesn’t track your MMR for solo and party queues. This function matches you against another player in the Mid Lane. This match is over when one player dies twice, loses a tower, resigns or disconnects.

Multiple Dota 2 players are reporting that a bug is causing them to they receive matchmaking bans until the year Multiple players posted screenshots and texts to the Dota 2 subreddit showcasing their unexpected matchmaking bans, expressing dismay at how long the ban lasts for. Many of the users gave testimony of their non-toxic behavior and even provided proof by linking their DotaBuff profiles to prove their innocence.

Some claimed that the near year ban came after the game unexpectedly crashed, while others say it happened right after a normal ranked match. In the comments of these posts, more users reported that they too had received the same ban at the same length with zero explanation as to why they are banned. The screenshots show that the only vague reasoning provided is due to “excessive reports, failing to ready-up or abandoning. This length of ban has been seen in Dota before, but it has been exclusively used in the recent past to try and combat smurfing, boosting, and toxicity.

The players who are reporting these lengthy bans now are allegedly playing on their main accounts and demonstrating high community scores. By the time these bans run out, TI27 will have just finished a few months prior, which will hopefully be the first International to be held in outer space.

Valve is reportedly slapping misbehaving DOTA 2 players with 19-year bans

Don’t you just hate it when you queue up for a match in your new favourite game and get destroyed by a team of high-level players? Well, so does Valve, it would seem as it just recently swung its banhammer so hard it could most likely be heard across the surface of Tellus. The bans in question were focused on Dota 2 players “abusing matchmaking“, which most likely refers to players boosting, de-ranking and using smurf accounts.

In English, not video game speak, this would mean playing with a team of higher-ranking players, voluntarily doing bad to lower ones rank and play worse players and using a brand-new, separate account to play new players as a game veteran, respectively.

Added “Cheating or MMR Abuse” report type – for reporting players who are manipulating matchmaking, scripting, hacking or similar.

A comprehensive matchmaking system is an important factor in being able to enjoy playing Dota, regardless of which hero or role you prefer. Matchmaking involves various tradeoffs and our goal is to find the best balance between all the different factors. There are two major aspects with this change: 1 the teamplay and social aspect and 2 the value and correctness of the MMR value.

For the teamplay aspect: We think it is really crucial for you to not have a disincentive to play with your friends. The game currently overly emphasizes playing solo and establishes a strong social reward mechanism for this, which causes many players to prefer playing alone than with friends. We believe that bias has over time caused more negativity and unhappiness when playing Dota.

Furthermore, Dota is a very teamplay heavy game and we want to consider that aspect a bit more strongly in the hierarchy of matchmaking values. For the correctness of the MMR aspect: We recognize that there is a tradeoff here on the mmr data quality if the match has solo mmr numbers with party mmr numbers, however we feel that the impact of that data noise is much smaller than even we initially considered it to be early on and generally with how it is discussed online.

Most of the issues related to this we think we can solve with better algorithms. Another common case is playing with a friend who has a higher mmr than you, expecting that it will cause your mmr to go higher. While that has been at least partly true in previous matchmaking system iterations, our most recent version does a fairly good job of addressing this. We have enough data to form matches that cause you to have an even chance to win by carefully choosing the opponents that have a similar makeup.

First of all, Valve, decided to scrap the concept of solo and party MMR, in order to push players to play with their friends and basically socialize. The concept of party and solo MMR was that the power was given to the player in order to decide whether one wants to queue for a solo game or a party game. Valve basically transitioned the ranked roles matchmaking system from the Dota plus to the normal matchmaking system making it available to everyone.

It can be because of a low behaviour score but not always. After the experimental update rolled out, Valve received a lot of complains that players queue for a support role and end up picking core heroes, Valve decided to punish such players by increasing the report frequency to 5 and penalizing the players that fail to pick the heroes according to the roles decided. After the experimental update, Valve devices to take the average of part and solo MMR.

Now the impact this has is massive for example if a player has 2k solo MMR and has 5k party MMR then the player will end up queuing with divine or high-level ancient players, now this may spoil the ranked experience for others. If a player queues for a support role, after finding the match the hero grid should limit the ability to choose a hero to only support heroes and hence revoking the power to pick a core hero and spoiling the game.

Majority of the players are not happy with the new matchmaking system. Valve has promised improvements to the matchmaking system with community feedback after The International ends.

Valve to implement more matchmaking improvements for Dota 2

While VAC bans aren’t the focus of today’s story, they do demonstrate Valve’s no-nonsense approach to cheating and misbehavior in its games. Recently, this approach was further displayed when Valve opted to launch a wave of bans against “abusive” DOTA 2 players. The ban waves, among other things, were unveiled in a September 17 announcement post published by the DOTA 2 team, which has since been removed and subsequently preserved thanks to an archive.

The first ban wave affected players with “exceptionally low” behavior scores, and the second impacted those who bought or sold Steam accounts for the purposes of gaining a higher or lower matchmaking rank in DOTA 2. Other bans were dished out as well, for reasons that primarily relate but are not limited to cheating the matchmaking system.

Opinion about the new Dota 2 matchmaking system

On the 17th of September Valve announced major new changes into matchmaking for the upcoming season and has ever since kept themselves busy rolling out one update after another in their attempts to improve the player experience. Valve introduced separate core and support ranks for individual players with a percentage of each rank influencing the other after removing solo and party MMR from the game. Having introduced the ranked roles system allowing players to select the role they want to play before queuing for matchmaking Valve also introduced the role report function.

Players with a behaviour score of below had their communication privileges revoked. Also those found violating Steam Service Agreement will have their accounts permanently banned from matchmaking and have the associated mobile number with their Steam account permanently blocked from playing ranked.

Dota 2 is losing players, which will make finding games harder for the players who are left. But it is a troubling sign for what was once the dominant force in Steam gaming. What’s causing players to leave? That can be hard to pin down, but we have a few ideas. A new player toxicity system was implemented earlier last year that is handing out 2-decade bans for excessively toxic player behavior.

That has likely caused more than a few forceful ejections from the Dota 2 community, given the legendary toxicity that online MOBAs endure. Another factor might be the Hong Kong protests. Besides causing a significant number of Hong Kong players to stop playing in order to take part in the protests, players were also banned from Dota 2 for typing in anti-China messages during The International But the most likely reason is just that Dota 2 is old.

The game first released in , and since then it’s gone on to become the biggest game in eSports history. However, the game has matured and older players are likely moving on to different, newer games. If new players don’t make their way to Dota 2 to replace them, then overall player count decreases. This could lead to a downward spiral of players as fewer players make matchmaking more difficult.
